According to Australian Magpie by Gisela Kaplan, the Australian Magpie is one of the premier songbirds in the world. They're territorial and tend to stay in one place for a long time, and seek out close acquaintances with humans living in their territories.
This is the Dad of the pair of Magpies who rule this territory, and I call him Big Guy. The mum is called Molly because she holds her left wing a little high (after Molly Dooker, the Aussie slang for a left-hander). Their 2004/2005 baby, Stuart (who, as I discovered later, turned out to be a girl), was named after a friend in the ACT Wine Club.
This guy and Molly would come to any one of my kitchen windows and sing the most beautiful songs. In return, as expected of course, I would give them raw beef mince. They're known for mimicking sounds in their territory. I have a video of this guy where, at various points during the lovely song, you can hear him bark just like the next door neighbor's dog. I am not making this up. I have it on tapeI swear.
Big Guy would strut into the kitchen and come right up to me and wait patiently for the mince (Molly was a bit more cautious). After dining, Big Guy would sometimes check out the rest of the house before leaving (it is, after all, part of his territory). On occasion he would ask to come in the sliding glass door on one side of the kitchen and head straight to the sliding glass door on the other side of the kitchen, just sort of passing through. It was apparently far too much effort to go around the house to get to the other side, especially when he had me trained so well as his bellhop. I did notice they prefer to walk rather than fly when at all practicable.
